Gemology as an Evolving Technical Science

This presentation will discuss how gemology has evolved over the past several decades into a more technical science in terms of gem identification challenges and the tools and methods being used to address those challenges.  The presentation will conclude with some speculation on how gem research will continue to evolve over the next few years.

Ruby:  Country of Origin Determination Seminar

The Ruby: Country of Origin Determination Seminar will introduce the main sources of ruby around the globe and, their status in the market and their identifying characteristics. Participants will learn about the methods that the GIA Laboratory applies to determine ruby country of origin, including the utilization of traceable sample collections and advanced testing techniques in combination with decades of accumulated experience from gemologists and researchers. Additionally, the seminar will cover the complications and challenges involved in ruby country of origin determination.

Participants will be provided a digital reference guide, links to important ruby country-of-origin determination articles and a ruby inclusion chart.

Advanced Colored Stone Country of Origin Seminar (2 days)

Participants in the Advanced Colored Stone Country of Origin seminar will be guided by GIA researchers with expert knowledge of the methods used by GIA laboratories to determine country of origin for many colored stones. This 2-day seminar will provide a more in-depth review of commercial ruby, sapphire, and emerald sources and their defining characteristics than in the 2-hour seminar on these gemstones. Attendees will receive digital reference material.

  • The importance of country of origin determination, including a panel-type discussion about the importance of origin determination in the gem and jewelry industry.
  • Country of origin determination of ruby, sapphire and emerald, spinel, Paraiba tourmaline alexandrite and other colored gemstones.
