This is an overview of the use of screening & identification instruments in the last 25 years when colorless laboratory-grown diamonds (LGD) were rare, and now, with an industry-wide shift towards LGD. The lecture includes images of growers, crystals, and statistics on the production & cutting of diamonds at factories in India (the largest manufacturer of CVD diamonds), which the author visited.

Excavated jewelry from Jamestown, the first permanent English colony in North America has been interpreted as evidence of Catholics amongst the first settlers. Country of origin determination for the jet items however could profoundly alter the previous narrative. In a 17th-century context marked by a fear of witchcraft, if proven to be British jet, we may be forced to acknowledge a far darker history for the early United States.
