Inaugural World of Gems Conference Recap
Dallas, TX - September 29, 2008: The first World of Gems Conference, held in Chicago September 13 and 14, had a very strong debut, according to co-hosts Gemworld International and the AGTA Gemological Testing Center (GTC). The conference went on despite flooding in and around the hotel. Over 150 people attended the conference from as far away as Germany, the United Kingdom and Colombia.
The conference opened each day with a keynote presentation by noted gemologist John Koivula from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). He dazzled the crowd with his collection of photographs detailing the microworld of various gemstones. Laboratory updates were provided by Dr. Lore Kiefert of the AGTA GTC, Christopher Smith of AGL and Dr. Jim Shigley of GIA GTL. Other featured speakers included Ron Ringsrud, Gina Latendresse, Eric Braunwart, Robert Kane, Stuart Robertson, Gary Roskin and Paul Shannon.
" We were very pleased by the attendance and the information that was shared at the conference,” said Richard B. Drucker, CEO of Gemworld International. "I have received a tremendous outpouring of positive feedback from attendees about the relevance of the information to their business and the great networking with their peers."
"The real story lies in the remarkable accomplishment of Gemworld International and AGTA GTC in successfully pulling off an amazing, intensive, highly informative conference -- at no profit to themselves -- where the whole point was to educate and share knowledge coming directly from the labs and industry experts about current issues," stated attendee Elise Skalwold, FGA, GG. "More conferences like this should happen, more people should attend and, in-turn, convey more accurate information to the public.
"A book is being compiled that recaps the topics discussed at the conference. It will be priced at $39.95 and will be published in early November. Orders are being taken at GemWorld International (847.657.0555) or online at www.worldofgemsconference.com.
