Irradiated Gemstones, NRC, Blue Topaz
The American Gem Trade Association has a responsibility and an obligation to keep Members informed about the critical issues of the day regarding matters affecting your businesses. The issue of blue topaz irradiation is a big issue with varying degrees of impact on our members.

No one, that is no one, is in a position to advise our Members about what to do with current or already ordered inventories of blue topaz. This is a judgment call that must be made by individuals, themselves, who weigh and measure all of the information available. A number of large and small retailers have removed blue topaz from their shelves. Others continue to sell blue topaz to their customers.

The role of AGTA is to provide our Members credible information that can assist you in the evaluations of what to do. We also take seriously our advocacy role in assisting both government regulators and legislators to understand the interests and needs of our Members in the conduct of their businesses. In so doing we want to offer the following information for your edification and use.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is expected to promulgate additional and/or clarifying rules after gathering input and comments from the jewelry industry. Those new rules are anticipated no earlier than September, in order not to dilute Holiday sales, and certainly by January. AGTA will provide more definitive information to members as soon as the new regulations are published by the NRC.

AGTA Source Directory Reminder

The Source Directory is the most beneficial resource produced by the Association, and it's FREE! By now, your company should have received the information to update your listing regarding company contact information, Member of record and the products and services your company offers. Members also receive FOUR category listings for FREE. Each additional listing is only $50 each. All listings will appear in both the printed and the electronic versions. The information must be returned and signed to the AGTA office by August 31, 2007.

Please note: If you do not return your listing information to AGTA by August 31, the next directory will print the information that AGTA mailed earlier requesting an update.

AGTA Spectrum Awards™
Participating in the AGTA Spectrum Awards™ and Cutting Edge competition is a great way for Members and the Association to work together to achieve the same common goal: promoting colored gemstones and cultured pearls. In fact, this event is an integral part of reaching that goal through the consumer and trade exposure generated by the caliber of entries submitted. It's certainly a win-win situation for Members who contribute.

Entries are now being accepted in the Dallas office through September 25, 2007, and Members are encouraged to submit their favorite designs!

All entries submitted into the AGTA Spectrum Awards competition will be photographed and featured on www.agta.org. Entrants will also be given the opportunity to add a link to their website from the posted image. This is the first time the AGTA has featured the entire collection on their website! For those entrants not interested in having their work displayed, they will be allowed to opt out.

All entries submitted will be displayed for a media event where magazine editors, fashion stylists, producers and costume designers will be in attendance. This is a great opportunity for all designers – aspiring and acclaimed – to take advantage of what entering the AGTA Spectrum Awards™ can offer.
