AGTA's Hucker Resigns
The Board of Directors of the American Gem Trade Association announced June 13 that they have accepted the resignation of Douglas K. Hucker as CEO of the Association. Mr. Hucker will continue to work for the Association in an advisory capacity for the next six months.

Douglas K. Hucker was a former Board member and has served as the Association's Chief Executive Officer for the past ten years. The Board of Directors expressed their profound appreciation for Mr. Hucker's service over the past decade and for the role he has played in growing the stature and influence of the AGTA and in helping elected Board members firmly establish the AGTA as the most respected voice of the colored gemstone and cultured pearl industry.

AGTA President Rick Krementz said, "Our Association and our industry has benefited immeasurably by Doug's service in many capacities. He will continue to be part of our family and our community." Hucker will be honored with the AGTA Lifetime Membership Award at the 2008 AGTA GemFair™ Tucson Dinner Dance and Awards Gala.

"There has, perhaps, never been a period of time in our industry where there is such excitement and enthusiasm about colored gemstones and cultured pearls," says Hucker. "While I truly look forward to pursuing many opportunities on the 'outside,' I feel I will always be a part of the AGTA, and it a part of me. I am enormously proud of the work our many Board members and staff have accomplished during my tenure, chief among them being the continued growth of the AGTA GemFair™ Tucson as the most important marketplace for gemstones in the world, the opening of our AGTA Gemological Testing Center and the recent launch of AGTA's new brand as 'The Authority in Color.'"

Mr. Krementz has appointed a Search Committee to consider candidates for this position. The Chairman of the Committee is Omi Nagpal, Omi Gems. Other members are Barbara Lawrence, Boston Gems and Findings, Inc.; Kambiz Sabouri, Gem 2000, Inc.; Joe Orlando, Stuller, Inc. and Sampat Poddar, Byrex Gems, Inc.

The Committee is compiling a new job description to incorporate the existing challenges and opportunities the officer should expect to manage in this dynamic environment.

Omi Nagpal said, "We are excited about the new vision and brand that our Board of Directors has adopted. We expect our search to define the individual who can understand the complexities of our Association and the dynamic growth that is anticipated." Interested persons may inquire by contacting Omi Nagpal at omi@omigems.com.

Ed Griffin, AGTA Chief Operating Officer, will be the primary contact person for AGTA until a new CEO is announced.

Summer Trends That Pop and Blend
The fashions this season are as hot as summer itself. Neutral earth tones are dominating the runways with visions of creamy ecrus, sweltering slates, mossy greens and tempting sepias. While the spring accessories displayed bold, contrasting colors to accentuate the achromatic ensemble, summer flaunts a cooler feel using complementary hues to further enrich the accolades of the environment.

During AGTA GemFair™ Las Vegas, it was obvious that several exhibitors were doing their homework. Showcases flourished with rock crystal quartz, moonstone, rutilated quartz, smoky topaz, chalcedony and prasiolite. These popular gems aligned perfectly with savvy buyers keeping up with the trends.

Jewelers should take note that these demure, icy gemstones will catch glances when found in oversized rings, chunky bangles or long, sectioned necklaces. In yellow, white or the ever-blooming rose gold, you're sure to find homes for these sought-after styles.
